Hymn 285

VERSE 1
Prime of all the commandment is charity,
The virtue of which makes life simple and good,
‘Tis a standing order, to love one another
The Father of mankind thus commandeth all.

VERSE 2
Worship the King and obey all His decrees,
Love of neighbour and of brethren is the law,
Authority is none, unless granted by God,
Who is the author of life and love divine.

VERSE 3
To be able to speak in spiritual tongue,
While yet unable to prove thy charity,
Is a fruitless venture, it availeth nothing;
The world was by love created, love ruleth.

VERSE 4
The Father alone has love for all mankind,
His love transcends weak, strong and every nation;
And is not limited, only to special class;
He seeketh for mankind to love one and all.
