VERSE 1
The hour of darkness now cometh
When fears and terrors all awake
My soul faints and my spirit yearns
To Thee, Olumba for defence.
VERSE 2
Without Thy aid who can be saved?
For it is written in Thy book,
“The watchman’s labour is in vain,
Except Thou the city keepest.”
VERSE 3
For my pillow, Thy palms I bid,
While Thy bosom my resting bed,
On Thee reposed I am assured,
Where fears, nor terrors can’t assault.
VERSE 4
To Thee the darkness is but light,
Around Thee, light and dark alike,
Shine through the gloom; illumine me,
That I may find my rest in Thee.
VERSE 5
Under Thy wings, I seek my rest,
Be Thou my panoply and shield,
My guard from peril that besiege,
Till I, Thy dawn of beauty see.
VERSE 6
Like Jacob, I with sweet dreams filled,
A Bethel with the stone shall build,
When from sleep Thou grantest me pow’r,
Thy name to praise at sweet morn’s hour.
Amen
